About the Activity

Broken Bear — Inspired by the Japanese Art of Kintsugi

The Broken Bear programme is based on the Japanese art of Kintsugi — the practice of repairing broken things by mending areas of breakage with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object to be recognised and celebrated, rather than something to disguise or be ashamed of.

Each person receives a stuffed animal and general instructions with the goal of creating a meaningful and unique gift for a child in need. A group might remove a limb from their bear and sew the wound with gold or silver string — the gold and silver becoming part of the bear's identity, viewed in a positive light. A way to show kids to embrace their flaws and imperfections. The accompanying introduction card tells the bear's unique story, making it a truly personal gift.

How It Works

Here's how it works…

1
Receive Your Bear & Supplies

Each person receives a stuffed animal and a series of supplies. The goal is to create a meaningful and unique gift for a child in need — celebrating the animal's unique 'broken' features rather than hiding them.

2
Customise & Celebrate Imperfections

Teams modify their bears — for example, removing a limb and sewing the wound with gold or silver string in the Kintsugi tradition. A backstory introduction card is created to gift with the animal, celebrating its unique story.

3
Donate to a Children's Charity

Completed bears are donated to a children's charity or local hospital. Grupo Events coordinates the charity on your behalf. The donation moment is deeply emotional and universally memorable.

Various stuffed animals — bears, dinosaurs, rabbits, and more. Each animal is given a 'broken' feature (a missing limb, an eye patch) that is then repaired and celebrated with gold or silver string.
Completed bears are donated to a children's charity or local hospital identified by Grupo Events on your behalf (or your preferred charity). Each bear comes with a personalised introduction card.
